Sessions Edition 014 is all Mars. Not the planet, but the increasingly popular Japanese distillery. Japanese whiskies have gained much popularity in recent years and many might have tried popular brands like Yamazaki and Taketsuru.
Hailing from Nagano Prefecture in Japan is Mars Whisky, produced by a company that had its humble roots as a producer of Japanese shochu back in 1872. It has been distilling whisky since 1960. Known informally as Japan's third whisky company by Japanese whisky insiders (after Suntory and Nikka), it is also starting to quickly gain fans in the global whisky community.
This Sessions will be led by Singapore’s very own unofficial Mars “ambassador” Loh Chin Hui. Chin Hui’s reputation in the whisky circles is such that if he calls himself Singapore’s number one expert on Mars whisky, nobody will dare challenge that! We are thrilled that he will personally take participants on a journey through the history of Mars whisky across 6 different drams. It is not often one gets to experience such a wide range in the same sitting.
You will get to try a total of 6 drams:
1. Mars “Old Whisky”, bottled in the 1970s. One of the earliest bottlings Chin Hui is aware of
2. Mars “Maltage aged 12 years”, estimated to be from the late 80s
3. Mars “Sherry 452” single cask, 12yo, distilled 1986
4. Mars “Phoenix and the Sun” single cask, bottled for Whisky Talk Fukuoka 2016
5. Mars “Komagatake Tsunuki Aging Commemorative Edition”, bottled 2016 to commemorate the opening of the Tsunuki Distillery
6. Mystery Single Cask (Mars Limited Edition, Japan only release)
